Challenge Unlimited Therapeutic Horseback Riding

Challenge Unlimited Therapeutic Horseback Riding

Therapeutic riding… Background

As far back as the fifth century, BC, the Greeks recognized the benefits of horseback riding for people with disabilities. During the 20th century, it became evident that the movement of the horse enabled people with disabilities to experience gains in strength and endurance while improving balance, rhythm, posture, and coordination. For those with cognitive and emotional disabilities, development of a "caring bond" between person and horse has long been associated with increased self-confidence. Today, the technique of "therapy of the horse" is used extensively in rehabilitation programs worldwide.

The Curriculum

Challenge Unlimited Therapeutic Horseback Riding

A staff of professional instructors develops programs designed to meet the needs of the individual, oftentimes addressing issues that are difficult to treat in the classroom or clinic. From grooming and saddling a horse, to riding, each exercise is structured to gradually improve skills, self-discipline, coordination, and attention span. The end result? Stimulating physical exercise that strengthens muscles, balanced with heightened self-confidence, determination, and ambition.

Not enough credit can be given to the many volunteers who assist staff each week throughout the year. New volunteers receive training in workshops held weekly. Responsibilities include leading horses, sidewalking while clients ride, and helping them with chores. Volunteers who prefer more administrative tasks are always needed for office work and special events.
